He commanded infantry in Afghanistan, and special operations in Panama. In Afghanistan in 2012, Jake led patrols through villages contested by the Taliban. He saw firsthand the mistakes of the Forever Wars, and he's working in Congress to prevent them in the future. And when he returned home to Newton, he continued working at the local level. Jake won election to the Newton City Council in 2015, was re-elected in 2017, and topped the ticket in 2019.On the City Council, Jake chaired the Transportation &amp; Public Safety Committee &amp; was a member of the Land Use Committee, where he consistently supported pro-housing policies to address spiraling costs. Jake also worked on housing &amp; transportation at Liberty Mutual's innovation lab. Jake slept, ate, trained, and patrolled with an assault weapon for 4 years as a Marine officer. He believes weapons of war have no place on our streets or near our schools, which is why he’s working for an assault-weapons ban and other common-sense gun safety measures.In addition to fighting for an assault weapons ban, Jake’s gun-safety priorities include:<ul><li>Universal background checks to prevent criminals from buying weapons</li><li>Mandatory safe storage to protect children from their leading cause of death</li><li>Stricter enforcement of ghost gun provisions to prevent strong state laws, like those in Massachusetts, from being undermined by online retailers</li><li>Red flag laws to disarm those who are imminently a threat to themselves or others</li><li>Overturning the 2005 law that granted gun manufacturers immunity from liability, shielding them from lawsuits and stalling the adoption of safety devices</li></ul>Jake's work in Congress has earned him the<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://gunsensevoter.org/gun-sense-voting-candidates/"> Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate Distinction</a> and<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://bradypac.org/"> Brady PAC's</a> endorsement.

Ending Gun Violence

With abortion access in jeopardy across the country, it’s more important than ever that we elect leaders who'll protect the freedom to choose. Jake was endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund as a strong advocate for reproductive health and rights in Congress.The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade undermined women's right to control their own bodies and their own lives. With the Court failing to protect women's freedom, the U.S. House and Senate must step up and make Roe the law of the land – which is one reason Jake has advocated eliminating the filibuster.While we fight for reproductive freedom everywhere, abortion remains legal in Massachusetts, and federal &amp; state officials are working together to provide reproductive health care in Massachusetts for women in states that ban it.

Advancing Reproductive Freedom

Jake has also been one of the strongest congressional supporters of Ukraine, Israel, and Indo-Pacific allies in the global contest against tyranny, terror, and totalitarianism.As a member of the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, Jake has pressed for U.S. investments in science, education and infrastructure as the surest means of outcompeting the Chinese Communist Party. On the Financial Services committee, he was one of the earliest proponents of energy sanctions on Russia, which the administration has since employed. And Jake has been a strong defender of Israel’s right to protect its citizens against terrorist attacks.&nbsp;Support for democracies overseas must be matched by support for democracy at home. Jake has consistently pointed out that Xi Jinping’s best day in office was January 6, 2021 – and that the greatest threat to the United States is no foreign power, but the specter of another Trump term and the disaster that would entail for the rule of law and the Constitution.To improve the integrity of U.S. politics, Jake is a supporter of legislation to end the distortions of dark money, gerrymandering, and stock-trading by members. He is also in favor of term limits and an enforceable code of ethics for the Supreme Court.

As a millennial &amp; the youngest Democratic parent in Congress, Jake has a fierce sense of urgency to invest in clean energy and to ensure clean air, clean water, and clean soil.&nbsp;Jake strongly supported the Inflation Reduction Act, the biggest &amp; boldest climate action &amp; clean energy investment in history, in his first term in Congress. Since then, he’s been partnering with public &amp; private officials to advance clean-energy solutions, from fission &amp; fusion to offshore wind to hot-rock geothermal, while building environmental resilience through civil engineering projects throughout the district.&nbsp;Jake has also been a strong proponent of the land use &amp; transportation changes that reduce cities’ carbon footprint and improve walkability, like Complete Streets policies for cycling &amp; walking; liberalizing zoning for multi-family &amp; mixed-use development; and transit improvements.

Achieving a Clean Energy Future

Jake stood up to special interests and helped pass legislation to empower Medicare to negotiate drug prices and to cap out-of-pocket costs for seniors. Now, he’s working to extend &amp; deepen those benefits.By taking on the greed of the big health insurance companies, Jake is fighting to cap out-of-pocket costs for all Americans.When a physician prescribes a drug that you need to get healthy, insurance companies shouldn’t be able to shift cost and friction onto you to prevent access to that medication. But that’s exactly what’s happening: drug-pricing middlemen, known as pharmacy benefit managers, are denying access to patients and making independent pharmacists miserable while raking in billions of profit every year for their insurance-company owners.Jake is moving multiple pieces of legislation, much of it bipartisan, to take on the insurance companies to lower prescription drug costs for patients. He is also a leader in pushing for adoption of innovative pricing models for a new era of cell-and-gene engineering and other personalized therapies.

Drawing on his economics and business background, Jake has consistently offered policies, not talking points, to address the cost of living.&nbsp;When Republicans were trying to use inflation for political points, Jake offered real<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://patch.com/massachusetts/newton/auchincloss-says-republicans-politicize-inflation-new-op-ed"> solutions to get our economy back on track</a>. Pointing to the cost of housing as the Bay State’s biggest problem, Jake has also consistently worked for pro-housing policies at all levels of government, from the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in Congress to the MBTA Communities Act on Beacon Hill.As a Member of the Transportation &amp; Infrastructure Committee, Jake has worked to improve supply chains and to pass the landmark Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://patch.com/massachusetts/newton/america-competes-act-passes-auchincloss-amendments">CHIPS &amp; Science Act</a>, which will improve the building blocks of the economy, from roads &amp; bridges to science to workforce training.
